Record lumber prices in North America and Europe have brought lumber demand and sawnwood values to an all-time high in the sawnwood market. In local currency terms, log prices in the Nordic countries, the Baltic countries, Central Europe, Western Canada and the Western United States also reached all-time highs in the third quarter of 2021.

According to statistics, sawmills in Latvia, Estonia, Czech Republic, Austria and Germany have become some of the world's most expensive wood manufacturing regions, with sawmilling costs soaring 60-95% in a year.

Log costs have also risen in major timber exporters Finland and Sweden, but to a lesser extent than the rest of continental Europe. In the third quarter, however, sawmills in Norway and Sweden had the lowest lumber costs in Europe.

The European Sawwood Price Index (ESPI) reached a new all-time high in the third quarter of 2021 as sawnwood prices climbed across the continent. The index, which tracks sawnwood prices in nine countries, has risen by nearly 50% in a year, well above its 23-year average of €78/m3. Recent price increases vary by region, with Central Europe seeing higher price increases than Northern Europe.
